The Client
EHS Global Tech is a UK-based health, safety and environmental software company specialising in enterprise compliance solutions for organisations operating in high-risk environments.
As an ISO 27001 accredited organisation, EHS Global Tech places a strong emphasis on security, governance and operational excellence. Their mission is to eliminate the risks and inefficiencies associated with paper-based safety processes by replacing them with secure, auditable digital solutions.
Their software is used by organisations across multiple industries to improve compliance, reduce operational risk and strengthen safety culture across sites and teams.
The Challenge
Managing permits to work is one of the most critical safety processes within industrial and manufacturing environments.
Whether work involves hot works, confined spaces, electrical systems or working at height, every permit must be requested, reviewed, approved and tracked correctly. Traditional paper-based processes create significant challenges, including delayed approvals, incomplete documentation, limited visibility and the potential for human error.
EHS Global Tech identified an opportunity to transform this process through technology and required a trusted development partner to help bring their vision to life.
The goal was to create an enterprise-grade electronic permit to work platform capable of supporting complex workflows, multiple approval levels, contractor management, training validation and multi-site operations, all within a single secure system.
Our Approach
Swipe & Tap partnered with EHS Global Tech from the earliest stages of the project, helping shape the product strategy before designing, developing and launching the platform.
Discovery & Planning
We began by mapping the complete permit lifecycle, identifying the various stakeholders involved and understanding how permits moved through different stages of approval.
This discovery process helped define the permissions model, workflow architecture, reporting requirements and overall user experience before development commenced.
By investing time in planning upfront, we ensured the platform was built around real operational requirements rather than forcing users to adapt to generic software workflows.
Development
The platform was built using Laravel, providing a secure and scalable foundation for the complex business logic required within a safety-critical environment.
Key functionality includes:
- User-friendly permit wizard - streamlines permit creation and reduces administration time
- Multiple permit categories - including hot works, electrical work, confined spaces and working at height
- Multi-stage approval workflows - ensuring higher-risk activities receive appropriate authorisation
- Multi-site and multi-area management - providing visibility and control across entire organisations
- Mobile notifications - keeping stakeholders informed of permit activity in real time
- Digital handover sign-offs - including supporting evidence and documentation uploads
- Lock-off and isolation management - supporting safe system shutdown and maintenance procedures
- Custom hazard controls and risk assessments - tailored to individual organisational requirements
- Safe Contractor integration - helping validate contractor compliance during the permit process
- Learning Management System integration - ensuring training requirements are verified before work begins
- Comprehensive reporting and audit trails - supporting compliance, governance and continuous improvement
Security and resilience were key considerations throughout development, aligning with the expectations of enterprise customers and supporting EHS Global Tech's wider commitment to information security and ISO 27001 standards.
Testing & Launch
Given the importance of the platform within safety-critical operations, extensive testing was carried out across workflows, permissions, integrations and approval processes.
A phased rollout approach allowed organisations to adopt the platform confidently while ensuring stability, performance and reliability at every stage.
The Outcome
Today, the ePTW platform is used by major organisations including PepsiCo and KP Snacks, helping replace paper-based permit processes with a secure and auditable digital solution.
Safety managers gain real-time visibility of permit activity across their sites, while operational teams benefit from faster approvals, improved documentation and greater confidence that critical processes are being followed consistently.
The platform has become a key part of EHS Global Tech's software portfolio and continues to evolve as new customers, industries and compliance requirements are introduced.
For Swipe & Tap, the project demonstrates the value of combining secure software engineering, deep technical planning and close client collaboration to deliver enterprise platforms that improve both operational efficiency and workplace safety.
