OrderMyPhotos is a pioneer in school photo ordering services with over 18 years of industry experience. The company revolutionised school photo distribution by dramatically reducing delivery times from 28 days to under 48 hours - a transformation that set them apart in a competitive market.
Their platform serves photographers, schools, and parents across the UK, providing a seamless way for families to order their children's school photos using nothing more than a unique reference code. No account creation required.
The Problem
Despite their strong reputation and loyal customer base, OrderMyPhotos were running on an aging website and software infrastructure that was beginning to hold them back. Several critical issues needed addressing:
- Peak season performance: The system degraded under high traffic during busy photo ordering periods
- Offline maintenance windows: Updates required taking the platform offline, disrupting customers at key moments
- No mobile optimisation: The existing site wasn't built for mobile users, creating friction in the ordering journey
- Scalability concerns: The infrastructure wasn't equipped to grow alongside the business
OrderMyPhotos needed a complete platform rebuild that would preserve their core frictionless experience - where customers order with only a child's reference code - while delivering the performance and reliability the business demanded.
The Solution
We developed a fresh, modern, mobile-first website using the Laravel framework, designed from the ground up to handle the demands of a high-traffic photo ordering platform.
Platform Rebuild
The new platform was built with a clean, intuitive ordering flow that kept the simplicity OrderMyPhotos were known for.
Customers could complete their order in just a few taps, with no account needed - just a reference code.
Data Migration
One of the most complex challenges was migrating the existing data without disrupting live customers. We implemented a sophisticated migration strategy that safely transferred:
- 100,000+ database records
- 100GB+ of imagery
The migration was completed with zero downtime, ensuring customers experienced no interruption to the service.
Payments & Storage
We integrated Stripe as the payment platform, adding support for Apple Pay and Google Pay to make checkout as smooth as possible on mobile devices. For image storage, we deployed Amazon S3, giving the platform unlimited, scalable external storage with 24/7 monitoring.
Photographer Tools
Beyond the customer-facing platform, we also improved the backend tools available to photographers - including enhanced customisation options such as branded stickers and photo overlays, alongside improved analytics to help them understand their business performance.
The Results
The new platform launched to an immediate positive response. Within the first hour alone, over 50 orders were placed - a strong signal that the improved experience was resonating with users.
Order completion time dropped to 3 minutes or less, a significant improvement on the previous experience. The zero-downtime maintenance capability meant the team could update and improve the platform without ever taking it offline.
User feedback highlighted the improved navigation and overall usability, and photographers praised the new customisation tools and analytics available to them.
